Times Higher Education has announced its 2024 rankings for universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, with SIMAD University achieving a remarkable milestone by securing the 7th position across the continent. The university also emerged as the top-ranked institution in Somalia, further solidifying its position as a leading academic establishment in the region.

Dr. Abdulrahman Saleh Al-Muheilan, Chairman of the Board of Trustees at SIMAD University and Chairman of the Direct Aid Association, expressed his pride in this achievement, emphasizing that it is the result of continuous efforts by the university’s board, academic staff, and administration to enhance performance and improve educational quality.

“This ranking is a significant step toward fulfilling the vision of the Direct Aid Association, which aims to equip society with scientifically competent and ethically driven leaders while focusing on developing individual talents and fostering excellence in all aspects of life,” said Dr. Al-Muheilan.

The Times Higher Education Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings are a unique initiative developed in collaboration with African institutions and organizations. The rankings prioritize criteria that address the developmental challenges of the region, such as promoting inclusivity, supporting economic growth, achieving sustainability, and positively impacting local communities.

Phil Baty, Chief Global Affairs Officer at Times Higher Education, highlighted that this ranking stands apart from other global rankings by focusing on the priorities and goals of higher education institutions in Sub-Saharan Africa rather than metrics designed for institutions in the Global North.

Founded in 1999 with support from the Direct Aid Association of Kuwait, SIMAD University has become a distinguished model for private, non-profit higher education. The university features nine main buildings housing 27 diverse academic programs and includes a fully integrated teaching hospital designed to provide an advanced learning environment for its students.

This achievement reflects SIMAD University’s commitment to delivering high-quality education and its leading role in developing human resources and fostering sustainable development across Africa.
